tongue & tongue webbing
Piercing of the tongue, while a relatively new piercing, is going through a surge of popularity that does not appear to be abating. International superstars like Janet Jackson and Scary Spice have given this piercing the "stamp of approval", so to speak and as such many piercing studios have trouble keeping up with demand.
Few problems exist in this piercing when properly placed but frenulum annoyance, gum and tooth enamel erosion and biting the jewellery can all occur if not performed correctly. The initial piercing should be made with a barbell 6 –10 mm longer than the thickness of the tongue to accommodate swelling.
Care during eating should be given during this period as once swelling begins to subside more of the barbell will be free to move around the mouth. At this time it is advised that a shorter more comfortable barbell be fitted. If ball problems still occur other alternatives such as threaded plastic balls can be fitted to lessen impact on the gums and teeth. Healing and decrease of swelling in the tongue is fast and more than one piercing of this area is not uncommon. After care is important and your piercer should be able to give adequate instructions in this area. Tongue webbing is performed through the frenulum skin under the tongue. Not all clients are suited to this piercing and usually a ring is inserted first for ease of fitting and then a barbell can be placed once the piercing has settled.
