Septums, another of the older piercings, are performed through the thin tissue just below the cartilage toward the front of the nose tip. Jewellery should not be larger than the tissue can comfortably support as this can be somewhat painful. A fast healing and easily stretched piercing the Septum is still confrontational to the general non-piercing public and not often accepted in the workplace. For this reason a "Septum retainer", a ‘U’ shaped piece of jewellery, or a circular barbell, that easily slips inside the nostrils can be worn. This will keep the piercing open during healing and still allow it to remain invisible to the average person.
